‘A Different World’ is back: Netflix trailer opens a new chapter at Hillman College

Netflix is officially taking us back to Hillman.

The streamer released the full Season 1 trailer Monday for its newA Different Worldsequel series, revealing a return to the fictional historically Black college that became one of television’s most influential portrayals of Black college life. The new series premieres Sept. 24.

But this trip to Hillman is not simply about recreating what worked nearly four decades ago. The sequel is passing the story to another generation.

At the center isDeborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of original-series favoritesDwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, played again by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy. Deborah arrives at Hillman for her freshman year carrying something most first-year students do not: the weight of being the child of two campus legends.

Netflix’s trailer makes that tension central to the new story. Deborah wants to prove she can succeed at Hillman on her own terms even as her parents remain heavily invested in her college experience. The result sets up a familiar coming-of-age story with a uniquelyDifferent Worldcomplication: How do you create your own legacy when everyone already knows your family’s?

Deborah’s world quickly expands beyond her parents.

Her new circle includesRashida, played by Alijah Kai;Hazel, played by Kennedi Reece;Amir, played by Jordan Aaron Hall;Kojo, played by Chibuikem Uche; andShaquille, played by Cornell Young IV. Shaquille also comes with his own Hillman connection: He is the son of Dwayne’s longtime friend Ron Johnson, with Darryl M. Bell returning to the role.

Across 10 half-hour episodes, Netflix says the students will navigate academics, friendships, romance and the everyday complications that come with figuring out adulthood. Deborah and Shaquille also share a romantic history, adding another layer to her first year on campus.

Showrunner and executive producerFelicia Pride, whose credits includeBel-AirandGrey’s Anatomy, has emphasized building Deborah as an imperfect young person still trying to understand who she is. That distinction could prove important for a continuation of a series remembered not simply for idealizing Black college life, but for allowing young Black characters to grow, fail, debate and change.

Netflix is not leaving the original class behind.

Guy, Hardison and Bell are joined by returning cast membersCree Summer as Freddie Brooks, Charnele Brown as Kimberly Reese Boyer, Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, Glynn Turman as Colonel Bradford Taylor, Karen Malina White as Charmaine Brown, Ajai Sanders as Gina Deveaux and Jenifer Lewis as Professor Davenport.Jada Pinkett Smithalso returns as Lena James.

And then there isDebbie Allen.

Allen, who was a major creative force behind the original series, returns as an executive producer and directed the sequel’s premiere episode. The trailer also reveals her on screen asDr. Langhorne, Deborah’s academic adviser.

The larger cast includes Cliff “Method Man” Smith as Coach Coles, Tichina Arnold as Darlene Duvall and Raven Goodwin as Dr. Brooklyn Boyer, while the trailer also teases an appearance from singer Summer Walker.

The return to Hillman will sound familiar, too.

Netflix announced thatBrandyrecorded a new version of the iconicA Different Worldopening theme. The singer said the original program had a major influence on her as a child, particularly because seeing Black people on television helped expand her own sense of what was possible.

Brandy follows a musical legacy connected to the series that includes Aretha Franklin, who famously performed the theme during the original run. Dawnn Lewis, who returns in the sequel, was also one of the song’s original co-writers.

It is an especially fitting bridge between generations. Brandy became part of another landmark era of Black television throughMoesha, whileA Different Worldhelped create the cultural environment that made more expansive depictions of young Black life possible.

The originalA Different Worldaired for six seasons from 1987 to 1993. Although it began as a spinoff ofThe Cosby Show, the series developed an identity of its own, using Hillman to explore friendship, dating, racism, class, politics, Greek life and the Black college experience.

That legacy creates both excitement and pressure for the Netflix continuation.

Returning characters can get longtime viewers through the door. Familiar music can trigger memories. Hillman itself remains one of television’s most recognizable fictional campuses.

But the newA Different Worldultimately has to belong to Deborah, Rashida, Hazel, Amir, Kojo, Shaquille and the generation they represent.

That may be the most promising thing about Netflix’s approach so far. Hillman is not being treated only as a monument to what Black television once accomplished.

It is becoming a campus again.

And onSept. 24, class is officially back in session.
